Effective Date: 19th June, 2025
Thank you for using iNatSpectro, a Chrome Extension that adds interactive audio spectrograms to iNaturalist observation pages. This policy explains what data the extension accesses, how it is used, and your rights.
1. What Information Does iNatSpectro Collect?
Current Version:
iNatSpectro does not collect, transmit, or store any personal or identifiable information. All processing—including audio analysis and metadata access—happens entirely within your browser.
2. What Permissions Does the Extension Use?
iNatSpectro requires access to the following domains:
www.inaturalist.org
static.inaturalist.org
These are strictly used to:
- Inject the spectrogram viewer into observation pages,
- Fetch taxonomic metadata for display settings,
- Retrieve audio files for local processing.
The extension also uses the declarativeNetRequest
API to apply local CORS header modifications, enabling access to audio data for visualization. No traffic is intercepted, redirected, or logged.
3. Future Features and Data Use
In future versions, iNatSpectro may offer optional features that help users upload or manage their own audio observations on iNaturalist. These may require:
- Authentication via iNaturalist (e.g. OAuth),
- Temporary access to your iNaturalist user ID or token.
If these features are introduced:
- You will be asked for explicit consent,
- No credentials will be stored without permission,
- Any data accessed will be used only for the requested functionality and never shared with third parties.
4. International Users
iNatSpectro is developed in Australia and follows the principles of the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). However, we are committed to respecting user privacy worldwide and will aim to comply with local regulations including the GDPR (Europe) and CCPA (California) where applicable, especially if future features involve personal data.
5. Security
All code runs locally within your browser. iNatSpectro does not include remote code, does not track user behavior, and does not send data to external servers.
6. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access any data collected about you,
- Request corrections or deletion,
- Withdraw consent at any time.
Currently, iNatSpectro does not collect any personal data. If this changes, this policy will be updated accordingly.
